Interview w/ Kona qualifier & wife on how he “drank the kool-aid,” overcoming relationship conflict as a triathlon athlete.

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to speak with Don and Kathleen, the couple behind Eat Love TRI, to discuss the difficult challenges athletes face in relationships, and how training and competition affected their own relationship.

The interview got  really interesting as they shared their own story – Don, a Kona World Championship Qualifier, was busy training and his wife was getting resentful. This is something I see all the time in my couples coaching practice in Harrisburg, PA.

Here is what Kathleen said:

“You see…when Don started really getting into triathlon (like y’all he REALLY drank the kool-aid) life was no longer filled with rainbows and unicorns. All of a sudden it seemed like our life together was much harder and not as much fun. And we had to change this!”

Fortunately, the couple was able to find a trained couples coach and turn their relationship around. So much of what we talked about during the interview resonated with Kathleen and Don, almost as if they were reliving those more difficult moments of conflict.

I shared a lot of the tools I use with couples in my coaching practice that help couples communicate better and allow partners to have those difficult conversations, and the couple shared some of their own ways for dealing with the challenges they have faced and have now overcome and found their relationship happiness.

I even offer some of the tips I usually only give my coaching clients.
